Often it is difficult even for a physician to determine the precise origin of the pain. Therefore there are no absolute rules that enable you to determine which pains may be treated at home. The following guidelines usually work and are used by doctors, but there are occasional exceptions.

A shooting pain lasting a few seconds is common and means nothing. A sensation of a “catch” at the end of a deep breath is also trivial and does not need attention. Chest wall pain can be demonstrated by pressing a finger on the chest at the spot of discomfort and reproducing or aggravating the pain by this maneuver. Pleurisy gets worse with a deep breath, heart pain does not. When pericarditis is present, the pain may throb with each heartbeat. Ulcer pain burns with an empty stomach and gets better with food, gallbladder pain often becomes more intense after a meal. Each of these four conditions, when suspected, should be evaluated by a physician.

Spasm of the esophagus can cause severe pain mimicking a heart attack and is quite different from the acid-burning that we called heartburn. This spasm pain feels as if it is expanding from inside the chest rather than squeezing from the outside as does heart pain. And it is often relieved by a drink of water, while heart pain is not.

If your chest pain is a new sensation and you are not sure what is going on, you should be evaluated promptly in an emergency medical facility. This is a complaint for which it is better to be conservative. See a doctor. Exceptions are chest wall pain, particularly if you had unusual exertion a day or so before, or pain that you are sure is coming from the esophagus. These you can treat with rest and acetaminophen, in the case of chest wall pain, and water and antacids, in the case of pain coming from the esophagus.

could this be angina?

ok im 23 and since i was about 18 ive been getting this chest pain. tightness feeling in my chest, almost feels like acid reflux, and it shoots into my back between my shoulder blades, and it shoots into my neck and jaw. it lasts anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes. it happens all the time now whether im walking, sitting, standing, relaxing. sometimes ill have it for weeks at a time, and sometimes i wont get it for a couple months. i googled all the symptoms and angina is what popped up and im a little upset just because it could be a possibilty. so any positive feedback would be great. I am going to call my doctor tomorrow, but i just figured i’d get others opinions. thank you

An Important Look At Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is also sometimes known as coronary artery disease or in laymans terms, heart disease. Coronary heart disease is the leading case of death for both sexes and strikes approximately 13 million Americans every calendar year. Coronary heart disease is what is known as atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries. It takes place when the arteries become congested with fatty plaque. They then narrow, making it difficult for blood to freely flow through. Without the proper supply of blood to and from the heart through the arteries, the heart quickly becomes depleted of both essential nutrients and oxygen, which affects its functioning.

The coronary arteries can easily be compared to tubes that are hollow. Inside of the arteries the surface is smooth and very elastic which makes the passage of blood a very simple and efficient process. During the adolescent years, fat deposits begin to build up in the walls of the blood vessels very slowly. As the years pass the fat builds up even more and too much can cause problems with the walls. The blood vessels respond by attempting to start the healing process. The cells of the blood vessel walls release chemicals that cause the surface of the walls to become very sticky.

After this process begins, other things such as calcium, proteins and inflammatory cells began to stick to the blood vessel walls as they pass through. The fat along with everything else that ends up sticking to the walls is known as plaque. The plaque gets thicker and thicker and eventually causes the arteries to harden, which is known as atherosclerosis.

The deposits of plaque are hard on the exterior but have a soft, mushy consistency to the interior. It is possible for the hard exterior to tear or crack and this can leave the interior exposed and vulnerable. If this occurs then platelets (which are particles shaped like discs that help make clotting of the blood possible) rush to the spot and the result is blood clots developing around where the plaque has built up. This is not good because it results in the arteries narrowing to an even greater extent. In some cases the blood clot will come apart and the supply of blood will return to normal. However this is not always the way it happens.

As time passes a coronary artery that is narrowed due to plaque will sometimes develop a new set of blood vessels that manage to get around the blockage in the blood vessel and can allow blood to freely reach the heart. This is often not so when stress is great or when there is increased exertion. In this case the new arteries that have developed may not be strong enough yet to transmit blood to the heart.

In extreme cases, a blood clot may make it impossible for blood to reach the heart at all. This is known as acute coronary syndrome. The three heart conditions that fall under this category include unstable angina, non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Well you should be evaluated by your physician and get serial CPK’s and an EKG done to see if any damage has occurred. Ateriosclerosis,thickening and hardening of the arteries is in my question?

I understand this to be calcium deposit in the artery walls in the heart and all other areas including the legs to the brain.Now i understand artherosclerosis / arteriosclerosis is the same problem but is calcum or fatty deposits. My question would be can this problem be disolved by nutrition or any way other than surgery.

Is it possible to have C.A.D under the circumstances?

The passed few months I’ve been really worried about my health. I have hypertension which seems to be getting a lot better. around June it was 151 over 100. About 2 weeks ago when I had it checked it was 110 over 70, that’s good progress, don’t you think? I’ve had recurring chest pains that sometimes arc from the center of my chest to my left collarbone, and at other times arc from one part of my right collar bone to my right shoulder without the chest pain. It seems that I have angina attacks as well, a weird warm, numb like feeling on the left side of my body from my cheek bone all the way down to my ankle. From June up to now I have had two E.K.G.s, two blood tests, and a urine test. Everything came back perfect. My doctor and I settled on the fact that I could have a problem in the esophagus. But I’m still thinking otherwise. Which leads to my question. Even though all my tests came back perfect, is it possible that I could still have C.A.D?

Typical angina (by definition) is a sensation of chest pressure that comes on when you exercise or get emotionally upset and goes away with rest or taking nitroglycerin. It usually lasts for several minutes. The most common cause is CAD. (This doesn’t seem to be what you are describing)

I have to interview a nurse for my wellness class at school. So, if you’re an actual nurse, could you please answer a few questions about heart attack?

1) About how many people come in with a heart attack each month or week?
2) How many of them survive?
3) Do patients come in clutching their chests like in the movies or is that not the case?
4) Are the patients that come in usually unconscious or conscious?

7) What gender and age group do you see most of?

10) How do you distinguish angina from a heart attack?

1)I work in a specialist heart hospital so I probably see more than most nurses as anyone with heart attack in 10 mile radius comes to us. It does various on time of year believe it or not. On average thought it’s usually 2-3 a day with one being a ‘serious’ heart attack and 2 of them being ‘minor’ ones.

8)Yes although this is rarer and usually due to some underlining problems such as an arrhythmia problem. We see a few that are brought on due to illegal drug use.

9)Yes children do have heart attacks but again it is usually due to another medical problem

10)They’re two completely different illnesses however they can present themselves in same way – chest pain. An ECG will tell straight away if it’s a heart attack and if not more tests will be done to diagnose problem e.g. angina

What inference we can draw if a doctor who conducted Tread mill test comments ” Intermediate probability”?

The doctor who performed Tread mill test on one of my friends, who suffer from diabetes and hypertension, made a comment on the test sheet that ” intermediate probability”.
