Heart Diseases – How Can We Prevent Them?

Inroduction

The heart has long been associated with the very nature of humanity. As long ago as the fourth century BC, Aristotle considered it to be the seat of the soul, the centre of nutrition and the vital source of heat. The very word ‘heart’ is still deeply embedded in our language in phrases such as ‘heart-felt sympathy’, ‘heart-to-heart talk’, or ‘the heart and soul of the party’, no doubt reflecting its central location in the body and its regular beat. It is also associated with many emotional sensations, so heart disorders hit at the very core of a person’s fabric and psyche.

Types of Heart disease

Heart Attack

High blood pressure

Ischemic heart disease

Heart rhythm disorders

Tachycardia

Heart murmurs

Rheumatic heart disease

Pulmonary heart disease

Causes Of Heart Disease :

For almost forty years, the lipid hypothesis or diet-heart idea has dominated medical thinking about heart disease. In broad outlines, this theory proposes that when we eat foods rich in saturated fat and cholesterol, cholesterol is then deposited in our arteries in the form of plaque or thermos that cause blockages. If the blockages become severe, or if a clot forms that cannot get past the plaque, the heart is starved of blood and a heart attack occurs.

Many distinguished scientists have pointed to serious flaws in this theory, beginning with the fact that heart disease in America has increased during the period when consumption of saturated fat has decreased. “The diet-heart idea,” said the distinguished George Mann, “is the greatest scam in the history of medicine.” And the chorus of dissidents continues to grow, even as this increasingly untenable theory has been applied to the whole population, starting with low fat diets for growing children and mass medication with cholesterol-lowering drugs for adults.

But if it isn’t cholesterol, what causes heart disease? We don’t know enough to say for sure but we do have many clues; and although these clues present a complicated picture, it is not beyond the abilities of dedicated scientists to unravel them. Nor is the picture so complex that the consumer cannot make reasonable life-style adjustments to improve his chances.

Heart disease includes the 13 Symptoms listed below:

•Angina- and its symptoms

•Chest discomfort

•Chest pain

•Brief pain episodes- often 2-5 minutes

•Pain worsens on exercise

•Pain relief from rest

•Shortness of breath

•Indigestion

•Palpitations

•Arrhythmias

•Light-headedness

•Fainting

Treatments for Heart Disease

There is a wide range of effective drug treatments for people with heart disease. These drugs can help lower blood pressure or cholesterol, prevent or dissolve blood clots, relieve and prevent angina symptoms or improve the strength or rhythm of the heart’s contractions.

Medical procedures to diagnose and treat heart disease include coronary angiography, coronary artery bypass grafts, coronary angioplasty, coronary stinting, heart transplants, operations for congenital defects, surgery for heart valve defects, electrophysiological treatments and implanting of cardiac defibrillator.

How can I avoid having a heart attack?

Talk to your family doctor about your specific risk factors (see box above) for a heart attack and how to reduce your risk. Your doctor may tell you to do the following:

•Quit smoking. Your doctor can help you. (If you don’t smoke, don’t start!)

•Eat a healthy diet. Cut back on foods high in saturated fat and sodium (salt) to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Ask your doctor about how to start eating a healthy diet.

Lose weight if you’re overweight

Control your blood pressure if you have hypertension.

Getting Denied For Health Insurance is Easy

Today shopping for individual private health insurance online is fairly simple. Simply type the keywords “health insurance” on any major search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or MSN and you are virtually guaranteed to come across a multitude of websites with designer custom made plans. However, too often consumers who are simply weighing their options forget the bigger picture. It’s called medical underwriting. Medical underwriting is a process in which an insurer will evaluate under what terms and provisions they will insure an applicant if at all. Many times shoppers spend months trying to find the perfect benefit plan for the best price only to find out the plan they applied for came back after they submitted the application with a much higher price than anticipated or worse, they were declined coverage altogether and now cant get individual health insurance because they passed up what their employer offered.

Getting approved for individual health insurance coverage is not so easy.

If you had group insurance offered by your employer for most of the time you had coverage and this is the first time shopping for individual private health insurance, do your self a favor don’t just shop to get a feel for the market, take the next step and apply. Applying for coverage is the only real way you will really know what offer will be given to you and under what terms or price. Consult with a knowledgably licensed insurance agent who is familiar with the medical underwriting guidelines of the major medical insurance carriers offering the coverage you seek and begin to initiate the application process. All insurance carriers on the individual market will require an application to be complete with the first month’s premium deposit for consideration. The reason why insurers request this deposit is to ensure the applicant is serious about applying since they will incur administrative cost to determine if they will insure you or not, however some insurers will only withdraw funds if your approved while others will take the first months premium deposit and refund you if you decline their offer or if you are declined coverage altogether. Basically the entire process is two fold while you are considering them they are considering you.

There are many reasons why an insurer will come back with a much higher price than anticipated in regards to the benefits you apply for or decline the application altogether. Here are just a few common examples.

Height and Weight: The physical condition of a proposed insured is of basic significance in underwriting. One of the determinants of physical condition is build. Build includes height, weight, and distribution of the weight. Experience has shown that being overweight increases the likelihood of death or sickness at all ages so for an insurer to justify the cost they will raise your rate accordingly if accepted.

High Blood Pressure: Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is an intermittent or sustained elevation of diastolic or systolic blood pressure. Hypertension is a major cause of stroke, cardiac disease, and renal failure. Complications occur late in the disease and can attack any organ system. Cardiac complications include coronary artery disease, angina, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, and sudden death. Neurologic complications include cerebral infarctions and hypertensive encephalopathy. Hypertensive retinopathy can cause blindness or glaucoma. Reno vascular hypertension can lead to renal failure. Just because it is controlled does not mean an insurer will accept you, also any combination of High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and Obesity almost always result in a decline with most carriers or at least a very high premium. The reason for all of this is from the insures point of view at very best you will create medical expenses in the form of diagnostic test, assessments, treatment, medication or at worst heart attacks and kidney transplants costing lots of money.

Smoking: When an individual uses tobacco in any form, whether it involves chewing, dipping, or smoking cigarettes, cigars, and a pipe, is an important risk factor by itself. In the past smoking or other tobacco use was considered in underwriting, but only rarely as a factor of importance by itself. For example, if a person had a respiratory problem and smoked, the underwriting decision might be less favorable than for an otherwise similarly situated non smoker. Smoking unaccompanied by any other negative factor however, was not a cause for a less favorable rating and continues to be ignored as a factor in many markets worldwide. Insurers now understand that smoking and any other tobacco use, even in the absence of any other negative factor, causes expected mortality and morbidity to be worse than average and the degree of variation is of such significance as to warrant separate classification. So important is this factor that the average female smoker can be expected to pay almost double the rate of the same non smoking male of the same age.

Occupation: Occupational hazards are not as important today as they were in the past, although in certain cases they can be. They may increase the risk in at least three different ways. First, the occupation may present an environmental hazard, such as exposure to violence, irregular living, or a temptation to experiment with drugs or overindulge in alcohol. Second, the physical conditions surrounding an occupation can have a bearing upon health and longevity, as in the case of persons who work in close, dusty, or poorly ventilated quarters or are exposed to chemical toxins. Finally there is the risk from accident, such as is faced by professional automobile racers, crop dusters, and scuba divers. An individual who has recently changed from a hazardous occupation to a safer form of employment must be underwriting carefully, as he or she may still retain ill effects from the earlier job or because the change may have been prompted by a health factor. It is common to see increased premium rates for bartenders, telemarketers, tattoo artist, truck drivers, actors, singers, artist, and servers to name a few if they get accepted at all.

Alcohol and Drugs: Information is usually sought regarding the proposed insured’s use of habit forming drugs and intoxicating beverages. Excessive alcohol use is associated with higher than standard mortality and morbidity meaning increased likelihood of death or sickness. If the individual applying for coverage uses alcoholic beverages in large amounts, he or she may be declined or offered substandard insurance while having to pay more to receive benefits, depending on the degree of usage. Use of alcohol in moderation is considered normal. Use of drugs not prescribed by a physician or drug abuse may call for a declination depending on the type of drug. A history of misuse or unsupervised use may require an extra rate increase depending upon the length of time since the drug or drugs were used, the nature of the treatment given, and whether there has been participation in a continuing support program such as Alcoholics Anonymous

Hazardous Sports and Avocations: Persons with a higher standard of living and searching for new ways to spend their leisure time often resort to hobbies and avocations. Such activities as scuba diving, mountain climbing, competitive racing, hand gliding, and sky diving clearly can involve a significant additional hazard to be considered in the underwriting process. If a hazard causes increased expected mortality and the individual is insurable on some basis, he or she usually is charged a flat extra premium commensurate with the risk. A rider excluding death or hospital expenditures resulting from participation in the hazardous activity may be employed occasionally. Also, riders excluding coverage for accidental injuries caused by football, basketball, or baseball players are not uncommon.

Anything: For those that think you are perfectly healthy, you are in for a big surprise. Even if you were never officially diagnosed with an uninsurable medical condition and by the way the list is endless, if you have not had coverage for some period of time a paramedical examination will have to be performed and insurers will be evaluating the test results very closely. Special attention will be given to the liver enzymes such as bilirubin, certain pressures in the kidneys such as the glomerular filtration rate which measures the rate of clearance of waste toxins you are capable of removing from your body and certain proteins in the body such as albumin. There really is not enough room within the scope of this writing to cover everything but it is important that you understand the reasons an insurer will decline your application or make you pay much more than anticipated is unlimited.

As a final note: The best advice I could give to consumers considering individual health insurance coverage is to avoid trying to do it yourself and instead seek the services of a licensed professional insurance agent who is not a captive agent working primarily with one carrier but is appointed with many carriers so he or she can place you with the carrier who will issue the coverage you seek with the price you can afford. Just remember you really don’t know what you get until you apply. If you are accepted and you don’t like the offer the insurer offered you, you can simply refuse and get refunded your fist month’s premium as long as you are within your free look period as mandated by applicable state and federal law.

For those of you still not ready to apply but need more questions answered please feel free to login to our website at health insurance questions and register your information and one of our consultants will be happy to assist you even if you are not yet ready to apply. At the very least by speaking with one of our consultants you will have a more accurate picture of what will happen whenever you are ready to initiate the health insurance application process with the insurance carrier you select.

Chest Pain?

My mom has this about once every month or so, it start under the left ribcage and goes through center of chest and goes to neck and throat. It feels tight and gripping and feels like she is choking. It lasts about 5 minutes and then suddenly goes away. She won’t go to the doctor, she can[t afford it. Is this a upcoming heart attack or angina or what?

She is a smoker and has been inder stress alot here lately. Also, she does not get regular exercise. She is at an average weight

That is angina. Most probably stable mild angina since it is only for 5 minutes once a month. Is it related to physical activity or is it at rest? Not to worry so much but she needs advice and some medication.

She needs to check her cholesterol level. take nitroglycerin, those tablets that go under your tongue to relieve the pain. check her blood pressure and pulse regularly, don’t do hard exercises, and have a healthy diet free of fats. take also lipolytics if she ‘s having high cholesterol level. Her case in the long term can develop to stroke or myocardial infarction (heart attack), but for the short term effects it is still mild.

edit; you must get worried when it becomes more frequent on weekly basis.

Edit; Smoking is so important to stop at this stage. It will stop further damage to the arteries nourishing the heart.

bluei down there , has expressed a good point, when the pain lasts for more than 30 minutes then it is the time to think of myocardial infarction and heart attack and call 911.

Herbal Remedies for Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) results in nearly 1 million deaths each year and millions more are living with this disease and the limitations which lead to an early demise. Coronary Artery Disease is avoidable and reversible by following a healthy diet and supplementing with targeted nutraceuticals. Amazingly, this information has been understood and implemented with demonstrated results for decades and yet CAD remains the leading cause of death in the US today.

The most common and serious result of atherosclerosis is the development of lesions in coronary arteries that can cause chest pain known as angina pectoris. Angina is caused when blood flow is partially blocked by a blood clot. If the blood flow to the heart is completely blocked a heart attack occurs.
If a blood clot occurs in a cerebral artery then a cerebrovascular accident or stroke can happen. Peripheral vascular disease occurs when atherosclerosis in the abdominal aorta, iliac arteries, and femoral arteries produces temporary insufficient blood flow in the arteries upon exertion. This can lead to tissue death and gangrene of the extremities. Mostly the heart faces lower oxygen supply because of atherosclerosis and this is even termed as hardening of the arteries. At the time of such condition, plaques which are actually fatty deposits get formed in the blood vessels’ linings. These plaques (at the time of formation) make your arteries narrow and because of this only few amount of blood vessel is able to reach the heart, therefore the supply of oxygen also gets lessen. Atherosclerosis arise frequently because of more amount of bad cholesterol as well as triglycerides that circulate in your bloodstream.

If the atheromatous plaques do not block more than 70 percent of the artery, patients will typically not begin showing the symptoms that are associated with the disease. Once the atheromatous plaques block more than 70 percent of the artery, the patient will begin showing symptoms. The heart will begin working harder to increase the amount of blood that flows to it, and the lumen may nearly become completely blocked. A patient who is in this situation will typically have suffered from multiple heart attacks, and may have angina as well. The restriction of blood flow to the heart is called ischema, and the cells will starve because they don’t have oxygen.
There are a number of things responsible for the development of Natural Remedies for Coronary Artery Disease. Smoking or being overweight is a common cause, while a lack of vitamin C can also lead to the development of this condition. There is also evidence that this disease is genetic in nature. Someone who comes from a family where many members have developed coronary heart disease will be much more likely to develop it themselves. People who have large amounts of triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins have an increased chance for developing this condition. Angina is defined as the pain a patient will go through when they have an advanced form of the disease and find more information on http://www.babaramdevmedicines.com/ramdev-medicines/coronary-artery-disease.htm

Overview

Interventional Cardiology refers to various non-surgical procedures for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Interventional cardiologists use catheters – thin, flexible tubes – to get within blood vessels for diagnostic tests or to repair damaged vessels and heart structures, often avoiding the need for surgery.

We Care Program Interventional cardiology hospitals in the foreign partner has team of interventionalists, nurses and technicians.

  • Unstable angina
  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Valvular heart
  • congestive heart failure heart ..

Many patients experience above conditions have cardiac catheterization – with angioplasty and stent placement to relieve blockages in the heart. Our program of angioplasty / stent success rate, which is among the top cardiovascular centers across the country, is more than 95 percent and the complication rate below 3 per cent. What type of heart disease are treated with interventional cardiology?

interventional cardiologists to treat narrowing of arteries and heart valves weakened – often caused by coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease or peripheral vascular disease.

Coronary heart disease is a narrowing of the coronary arteries, tubes that feed the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. This narrowing of the arteries is caused by atherosclerosis – the accumulation deposits of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and plaque on the inner surface of arteries. Atherosclerosis restricts blood flow to the heart, which may produce heart attacks or other heart problems. Symptoms can include angina pectoris (chest pain intermittently), difficulty breathing, sweating, nausea and / or weakness.

Valvular heart disease involving heart valves that do not function properly to regulate the flow blood in the heart chambers. This may be due to birth defects or damage caused by rheumatic fever, a bacterial infection, or a heart attack. Valves can also degenerate with the normal process of aging. To compensate, the heart must pump harder, and may be unable to provide adequate blood flow to the rest of your body. Two common forms of heart valve disease are stenosis of the aortic valve and valve regurgitation mitral. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, swollen ankles and legs, fatigue, dizziness and / or fainting …

What is a coated stent?

A stent is a wire mesh tube inserted after angioplasty to keep the artery propped open. coated stent (also called drug-eluting stents) provide an additional benefit: they throw a medication that prevents scar formation during the first weeks after insertion, when cure is more likely to occur. With traditional stents, about 20% of patients undergoing angioplasty restenosis training experience – scar tissue around the implant – which can reduce or block the artery again.

The use of a coated stent significantly reduces the patient might need a another procedure due to restenosis. Despite the drug-eluting stents have been recently approved by the FDA in April 2003, cardiac patients to hospital treatment abroad We partner has access to these devices for years, through trials clinics.
