angina while resting

is my heart going bad?

I admit I am severely overweight. I weigh nearly 300 lbs and I am 5’5″. I just got back from a trip across country and while trying to get through the terminal my heart started to hurt really bad. My face turned almost purple and I couldn’t breath. I was sweating out of control. Even my eyes seemed to sweat if that makes any sence. I only had to go 20 gates to my flight and half way there I couldn’t go any farther. The airport had to give me a ride the rest of the way. The woman sitting next to me asked if I was ok and I told her I just needed rest. My Dr. said it was probably angina and scheduled a stress test. I know I need to exercise but my heart hurts when I do. I have a horrible cough and am spitting out phlem. Im not sure what all this means. any one have any ideas?

Your heart is probably under a lot of strain because of your morbid obesity – I use this term as an actual classification because your BMI is almost 50. A BMI of 25 is regarded as normal. You’re deconditioned because you likely don’t exercise. You likely had an acute spell because you caught a cold and you don’t have much – if any – reserves left as far as exercise tolerance. Even people who exercise on a regular basis can have a decrease in their tolerance to the point of being tired just going up stairs while they’re recovering.

Weight loss is a factor of both exercise and diet. Watch your diet. Ease into exercise – people can have a greater chance of things like heart attack going from no activity to intense (relatively speaking) activity because of decreased reserves and sudden strain. At this stage you would benefit from a nutritionist and/or a fitness trainer.

Long story short this is your wake up call. Let it go much further and soon you will be physically unable to exercise due to strain on both your heart and your joints. Once that happens, it tends to be a downward spiral ending in heart attack or being bedridden or restricted to a scooter at an early age.

Work with your doctor – whether your heart is currently having problems or not, if you continue without making changes, it’s a guarantee.
