Blood clots or thrombus is one of the leading cause of heart attacks, strokes and brain damage. People who develop blood clots either in the veins or the heart are in high risks of dying. This fatal condition is known to be asymptomatic until conditions worsen.
Blood clots are usually caused by damages in the vessel linings. Leaking, lacerations or microscopic damages are said to be the usual damages seen in the vessels.
The usual events where blood clots are seen is when a person gets scrapes or wounds from accidents. The blood clot seen in these are helpful because they stop excess amounts of blood from exiting the body. But when it comes to another condition such as blood clot in the heart, it already becomes fatal.
A blood clot in the heart is said to be caused by several factors including conditions such as Atrial fibrillation, where the upper chambers of the heart function irregularly causing blood to pool and become stagnant, and later on will form into clusters.
Another said cause is infection in the heart or the valves, where in deposits from the infection like pus mix with blood and will later on cause clots.
Heart conditions like congestive heart failure or heart attack also increases a person’s risks in clot formation. When the heart is atypically functioning because of the said conditions, blood may tend to form as well. Medications are also said to contribute to the forming of blood clot in the heart but more studies are needed to prove it.
Preventing blood clots from happening may be simpler than what people expect. Studies say that treating conditions such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure which are known causes of blood clot formation is one way to prevent it from happening.
Anti platelet medications like aspirin and clopidogrel may also prevent blood clots from forming especially after a heart attack.
Getting regular check ups is said to be the best way to prevent blood clot in the heart from happening. Because this condition does not present any symptoms until the lot has left the heart, consulting doctors and taking heart examinations is needed to earlier diagnose the condition and locate the clots in the heart.
With the use of special devices like transesophageal echocardiography or TEE, doctors are able to locate the area of the heart where blood clots have formed.
As doctors and other people say, preventing is better than curing which is why getting tested earlier will be beneficial for a person. If a person has underlying conditions which contribute to the formation of blood clots, asking a doctor about possible treatment methods should also be considered.
