Triple heart bypass surgery is a procedure often done to those who have multiple blockages in the blood vessels that are responsible for providing the heart with oxygen and its own blood supply. When the heart does not get enough oxygen and blood, a condition called ischemic heart disease. It is considered to be one of the riskiest procedures because it is done while the heart is artificially stopped.

The name Triple heart bypass surgery is derived from how many blocked arteries are there and how many grafts are to be done, for example, if a person has two totally blocked vessels and will be needing two grafts, it is called double bypass, and if the person needs three, then it is called triple bypass.

Triple heart bypass surgery is done by slicing open the left part of the chest area and separating the breastbone to make an opening. The patient will be sedated and given general anesthesia before the procedure. The heart will then be connected to a device called the heart- lung bypass machine which will be responsible for your heart’s work while it is stopped.

Doctors will be using veins from either the wrist or the leg and then reconnect it to the heart making a detour for the blood, this process is called grafting. Once the doctors are done attaching the vessels to your heart, the breastbone will be closed with a wire and it will be staying inside the patient, after this, stitches will be done to close the skin flap.

The risks of having Triple heart bypass surgery includes, the most obvious, infection in the wound site. Getting infections are very likely to happen in any surgery. Blood clots are very possible to occur, but what makes it risky is that it may travel with blood and go into the lungs.

The chances of developing heart problems such as heart attacks, heart failure and strokes are also heightened. Post- pericardiotomy syndrome is also possible to happen, the symptoms of this condition include low- grade fevers and chest pains occurring at the same time. Having this syndrome may take up to 6 months or more.

It should be understood that people who undergo surgery must always check with a doctor even if there are no signs of infection or conditions of some sort. Only doctors can evaluate the condition of every surgical wound and that self treatments may only worsen the condition. Asking a doctor about advices when it comes to post surgical care should be considered as well to prevent problems like common infections.
